Mummy Bassey Ekere

Mummy Bassey Ekere was born on November 6, 1952, in the beautiful riverside community of Calabar, Nigeria. Raised in a devout Christian home, she developed an early love for hymns, community service, and faith. Her parents taught her the values of humility, industriousness, and love for God—values that became the foundation of her extraordinary life.

For over three decades, Mummy Bassey served as a passionate primary school educator. She didn't just teach math and English; she shaped characters. Generation after generation of children walked into her classroom and left with self-worth, discipline, and high aspirations. Beyond the classroom, she was an elder in her church and led several charitable outreach programs, earning her the affectionate title 'Mummy Bassey' by all who crossed her path.

Mummy Bassey's home was a safe haven. She was a woman of boundless hospitality. It was said that no one ever entered her house hungry and left without a full stomach and a comforted heart. Her kitchen was always warm, and her famous coconut bread and vegetable soup were legendary. She was married to her beloved late husband, Elder Ekere, with whom she raised five wonderful children who are now leaders in their respective fields.

Mummy passed away peacefully on May 18, 2026, surrounded by her children and grandchildren. Her final days were marked by the same peace and devotion that she lived by. Her favorite hymn was 'It Is Well With My Soul', a song she hummed even in her final moments. She leaves behind a rich legacy of love, faith, 14 grandchildren, and a community forever changed by her grace.
